The day

It is a long one, and worth it. The two optional stops are decided on the day, with you, not booked blind in advance.

1

The drive north

Pickup from your hotel before dawn, then three or four hours through the countryside as it wakes up — paddy fields, roadside stalls, villages. Your guide fills in the history on the way, so you arrive knowing what you are looking at.

2

Sigiriya Rock Fortress

A fifth-century palace on top of a two-hundred-metre granite plug. You climb past the frescoes and the mirror wall, through the lion’s paws, to a summit with the old foundations still laid out and the whole dry zone below.

3

Dambulla Cave Temple

Five caves cut into a rock face, filled with Buddha statues and painted ceilings that have been maintained continuously for two thousand years. Shorter climb, cooler inside, shoes off at the door.

4

Village lunchOptional

Optional. A short ride through the paddy fields, traditional cooking over a wood fire, and rice and curry made the way it is made at home rather than in a hotel.

5

Minneriya safariOptional

Optional. A 4×4 into Minneriya National Park, where wild elephants gather at the reservoir in the dry months. May to October is the season for the big herds. Deer, monkeys and a lot of birds year round.

6

Back to the hotel

A quiet drive home while the day catches up with you. Your guide will point you at what to do next.

Who it suits

People with limited time who do not want to miss the Cultural Triangle. Couples, families, solo travellers and small groups. It also works for transit passengers with a long enough layover at Bandaranaike, since the airport is on the way north.

If you would rather not compress it into one day, both sites sit inside the 7-day highlights tour at a gentler pace.

Questions

What does it cost?

The vehicle and driver-guide are $140 in a Kei car, stepping up with the vehicle: $190 in a sedan, $240 in an SUV, $290 in a van, $340 in a bus. On top of that it is $10 per person for the day. So one person in a Kei car is $150, two sharing a Kei car is $160 or $80 each, and four in a sedan is $230 or $58 each. Site entry is paid separately and we quote it in full so you know the real number.

Can it really be done from Colombo in a day?

Yes, and thousands of people do. It means an early start, 5:30 to 6:30am, which is also the best way to climb Sigiriya before the sun is high.

Are the entrance fees included?

No. Site entry at Sigiriya and Dambulla is paid directly at each site, and Minneriya has its own fee. We will tell you the current rates when we quote.

Can I add the Minneriya elephant safari?

Yes, as an optional add-on. May to October is when the big herds gather at the tank.

How hard is the Sigiriya climb?

Moderate. Thirty to forty-five minutes of steps each way, with places to stop. Dambulla is a much shorter climb and suits most visitors.
