Sigiriya, the fifth-century rock fortress rising straight out of the central plains, is one of the most-asked-about day trips from Colombo, and one of the most misunderstood. Here is the honest version: how far it really is, what a full day looks like, and exactly what it costs.
Is a day trip from Colombo actually realistic?
Sigiriya sits four to five hours’ drive from Colombo, so a day trip means an early start and a late return rather than a lazy morning. Some travelers prefer to overnight nearby and split the driving across two days, but a well-planned day trip is genuinely doable and one of the most popular tours we run. Expect an early pickup, around 5:30 to 6:30am, and a full day out – roughly 10 to 12 hours door to door.

Sigiriya’s site entry fee is paid separately, directly at the gate – it is not part of our price, and we would rather say that plainly than let it come as a surprise. Our founder Priyantha holds an SLTDA Chauffeur Guide Licence (C-1691), and a licensed guide can be arranged for your day on request.
How much does it actually cost?
We price by vehicle, not by a flat per-person fee that quietly changes once you are further into the booking. For one traveler in our smallest vehicle, a Kei car, the day is $150. Split between two people in the same car, that is $80 each. A larger group moves up the vehicle ladder, and we quote that vehicle in full. Larger vehicles – SUV, van or bus – are available for bigger groups, and every quote is one fixed price agreed with you before you travel.
What to bring, and good to know
- Comfortable shoes – the climb involves a fair number of stairs, some of them steep and exposed
- Sun protection and water, especially if you are climbing later in the morning
- An early alarm – the light on the rock and the surrounding plains is at its best soon after sunrise
- A little flexibility – it is a long day, and the drive itself passes through some of the island’s best scenery
