Sri Lanka With Teens: What Works, What Does Not, What to Skip

Teenagers are the hardest guests to plan Sri Lanka for. Most of the standard route is temples, tea and long drives, and none of those sells itself to a fifteen-year-old. This is what works, what to cut, and how to pace the days so the trip holds their attention.

Is Sri Lanka good for teenagers?

Yes, as long as the trip has something physical in it every other day. Sri Lanka works for teenagers when temple days and driving days alternate with things they do with their bodies: a dawn climb, a boat, a surf lesson, a train ride. A trip made only of temples and long drives is where teenagers switch off.

What actually works

The island is small and the scenery changes quickly, which helps. The things below earn their place because a teenager is doing something, not being shown something.

Climb something before breakfast

Pidurangala is the best first sell. It is a working Buddhist monastery, the office opens at 5am, and the last ten or fifteen minutes are a genuine hands-on scramble over granite. It is not technical and not exposed, but it is not a staircase either. The summit is 199 metres up and looks straight across at Sigiriya, which is the view in the photographs your teenager has probably already seen. Shoulders and knees must be covered, boys included. Our guide to Sigiriya or Pidurangala covers the timings, the entry cost and how to do both in one morning.

Sigiriya itself is about 1,200 steps, and most reasonably fit people are up in 30 to 45 minutes. If the family wants the frescoes and the palace ruins, climb Sigiriya. If you only have energy for one rock, the scramble is the easier sell to a teenager. Doing both works when you are staying nearby, not when you are driving up from Colombo for the day.

Put them on the water

Whale watching from Mirissa runs roughly November to April, when the south coast sea is calmer. Boats leave early, around 6:30am, and the trip takes three to five hours, much of it spent getting out to deep water. Anyone who gets seasick should know that before they book. Choose an operator that keeps its distance from the animals instead of chasing them. We can arrange whale watching as part of a custom itinerary: tell us your dates and we will build the trip around it and quote it.

Surfing is the other water answer. Weligama on the south coast is the usual place to learn, because it is a long sandy beach rather than a reef, and its season is roughly November to April. Arugam Bay on the east coast works in the opposite months, roughly May to September, but its best waves suit people who can already surf. Dates shift by year and by source, so check conditions with a surf school before you fix a day. October sits between the two seasons.

Put them on the train

The Kandy to Ella line is the best-known train ride in the country. Board at Nanu Oya rather than Kandy, for reasons we set out in the Kandy to Ella train guide. We do not sell train tickets, and our guide to booking them explains what to do instead. In Ella, the Nine Arch Bridge is a short walk from town, and many teenagers have already seen it online before they arrive. Little Adam’s Peak is a short, easy hike.

Pick the safari that does not involve waiting

A safari is hard on a teenager who was promised a leopard and given three hours of bush. Udawalawe is the easier choice for elephants, because the ground is open and published park information describes elephant sightings as close to certain. Yala is the park for leopards and carries no guarantee. Yala or Udawalawe sets out how to choose. Our own safari is on the Yala National Park Safari page. We can also run an Udawalawe day on request: send an enquiry and we will quote it.

White-water rafting

Kitulgala is where most people go for it. Water levels change with the weather and operators set their own age and weight limits, so check those with the operator before promising it to anyone. We can arrange it as part of a custom itinerary.

What to skip

  • Three ancient sites in one day. Two is the practical limit for most teenagers, and the third gets a blank stare.
  • Elephant rides, and any venue that keeps an elephant on a chain for visitors.
  • A new hotel every night. Teenagers do better with two or three bases of several nights each, ideally with a pool, than with a bed that changes daily.
  • Four early starts in a row. Say yes to one 5am morning and give them a lie-in the next day.

How to pace it

Alternate the type of day: culture, drive, something active, rest. A morning at Sigiriya or Pidurangala, an easy afternoon, a long drive broken up with one stop, then a day by the water makes a good rhythm. Sri Lanka is compact but the roads are slow, and published drive times tend to run low, so use the real hours in our Colombo to Sigiriya guide as a guide to the rest. How many days you need compares 7, 10 and 14 days, and with teenagers the longer versions help because they leave room for rest days. Best time to visit explains the monsoons coast by coast, which decides which water activity is available when you travel.

What it costs to move a family

Capacity decides the price before anything else. On a day tour a kei car or a sedan carries three people, so a family of three can use a kei. Four people need a van. Our Sigiriya and Dambulla day tour from Colombo comes to $170 for the day for three people in a kei, and $330 for four people in a van. Those are whole-vehicle totals, with entrance tickets paid on top, and fuel, tolls and parking are included. On the multi-day tours the price covers transport and guiding only, so hotels and meals are not included. For any other plan, use the quote form on the tours page.

Questions parents ask

What age is best for Sri Lanka with teenagers?

The climbs and early starts suit anyone who can spend a few hours on their feet in the heat, and that varies more by the person than by the birthday. For water activities, check the age rules with the operator directly.

Do teenagers need to cover up at temples?

Yes. Temples expect covered shoulders and knees from everyone, boys included, and shoes off at the door.

Is December a good month to go with teenagers?

December to February is the busy season, and the south and west coasts are calmer then, which suits whale watching and surf lessons. Book rooms and boats early.

Can you arrange all of this with a private driver?

Yes. Whale watching, surf lessons, rafting and an Udawalawe safari can all be built into a custom itinerary. Message us on WhatsApp at +94770860671 with the ages, the dates and what each teenager actually enjoys, or use the quote form on the tours page.

Can Essencylon arrange whale watching, surf lessons or rafting?

Yes, as part of a custom itinerary. Tell us the dates, the ages and what each teenager wants to try, and we will quote it.
