The Kandy to Ella train is on almost every Sri Lanka wish list, and right now it does not work the way older guides describe. Here is where the line stands, and how to still ride the part most people come for.
Can you take the train from Kandy to Ella right now?
Not as one journey. As of 21 September 2026 the Kandy to Nanu Oya section is still closed for repairs after Cyclone Ditwah, with reopening targeted for the end of 2026 or early 2027. Trains from Nanu Oya to Ella are running, so the working plan is a road transfer to Nanu Oya, then the train.
What changed, and what has not
Cyclone Ditwah hit in late November 2025 and did severe damage to the hill country main line. Repairs have come back in stages. The section from Nanu Oya to Ella, which takes in Ambewela, Haputale and the Demodara loop, has reopened and passenger trains are running on it again. Published sources disagree on the exact day, some saying 20 June and others 18 July 2026, so we are not going to pretend to a date.
The section from Kandy to Nanu Oya has not reopened. Repairs between Nanu Oya and Great Western were reported on 8 September as due to finish by December, and the wider Kandy to Nanu Oya restoration is being given as the end of 2026 at the earliest, with some accounts saying full reinstatement will not come before early 2027. Treat every one of those as a target, not a promise. Line repairs slip, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a date.
Nanu Oya is the station, and it is not in Nuwara Eliya
Nuwara Eliya has no railway station of its own. The station is Nanu Oya, roughly 8 kilometres from the town centre, and it is where the current journey starts. Coming from Kandy, that means the first leg is by road.
That is how we run it: we drive you from Kandy to Nanu Oya and you board the train there. Several current guides make the same point about what you give up. The stretch south of Nanu Oya is the one people come for, and the northern half through Hatton is pleasant tea country by comparison.
What the ride from Nanu Oya covers
From Nanu Oya the line climbs through Ambewela to Pattipola, the highest station on the line. The high point of the whole railway sits near there at roughly 1,900 metres above sea level, and it is noticeably cooler at that height, so bring a layer even if Kandy was hot. From Pattipola the line runs down through Ohiya and Idalgashinna to Haputale, on through Bandarawela, and finally around the Demodara loop into Ella, close to the Nine Arches Bridge.
The line is known for tea estates, waterfalls, tunnels and long views across the ridges. Published journey times for the Nanu Oya to Ella run come out at roughly two and a half hours, from about two hours twenty minutes to about three hours depending on the service. Trains run several times a day, from the morning into the afternoon, and the timetable has been shifting since the reopening. Check the official Sri Lanka Railways timetable for your date rather than trusting a screenshot, including anything you read here.
Getting a seat
Seats on this stretch go fast, and popular departures can be gone the same morning they open. How to book, the passport rules and why we do not sell tickets are all on one page, so we will not repeat them here: Sri Lanka train tickets: how to book them, and why we do not sell them. The short version is that we do not sell train tickets, but if you ask us we will try to get you a seat, free of charge and in your own name.
Planning the day around the train
The train sets the schedule, not the other way round. Work backwards from the departure you have a seat on, and remember the road leg from Kandy comes first. One way to take the pressure off is to break the trip in Nuwara Eliya, close to the station, and take the train the next day. Tell us your dates and the stops you want on either side, and we will build the road part around the train.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Kandy to Ella train running in 2026?
Only from Nanu Oya to Ella. As of 21 September 2026 the Kandy to Nanu Oya section is still closed for repairs, so you cannot board in Kandy and ride through to Ella as a single journey.
When will the Kandy to Nanu Oya section reopen?
The targets being reported are the end of 2026, with some accounts saying early 2027. Nobody can promise a date, and repair schedules move. If your dates are close to the target, plan as if it will still be closed, and if it opens early that is a bonus.
Is Nanu Oya the same as Nuwara Eliya?
They are neighbours, not the same place. Nuwara Eliya is the hill town and Nanu Oya is the railway station roughly 8 kilometres from it.
How long is the train from Nanu Oya to Ella?
Roughly two and a half hours on published timetables, between about two hours twenty minutes and about three hours depending on the service.
Can Essencylon book the train ticket for me?
We do not sell train tickets. If you ask, we will try to get you a seat, free and in your own name, and the full explanation is on our train tickets page.
Is it still worth doing without the Kandy end?
Current guides say the Nanu Oya to Ella stretch is the part people come for, so most of what the ride is known for is still there.
