The route
Six stops, in this order, though nothing here is rigid — tell your guide what you want more of and the day bends around it.
Independence Square
The tour opens where the country did. Your guide sets out how Sri Lanka got from colony to republic, which makes the rest of the afternoon read properly instead of just passing by the window.
Viharamahadevi Park
Colombo’s oldest public park, laid out under old rain trees opposite the National Museum, with a gold Buddha facing the Town Hall. A green, quiet stretch before the city gets loud.
Gangaramaya Temple
A working temple rather than a monument — part shrine, part library, part museum of gifts left by visitors over a century. Your guide explains what people are actually doing here and why. Entry ticket included.
Galle Face Green
The seafront where Colombo comes to walk at the end of the day. Kite sellers, the Indian Ocean, and the old Galle Face Hotel at one end with a hundred and sixty years of stories behind it.
Dutch Hospital Complex
Seventeenth-century colonial buildings, restored and now full of cafes and shops. Short stop, good coffee, and a clear look at how the old city was built.
Pettah Market
The real thing: barrows, spice sacks, textiles, fruit, and the shortcuts only traders know. This is where the food part of the tour happens.

Eating in Pettah
You eat standing up, in the middle of the market, from the places locals queue at. Pickles, short eats and whatever fruit is in season — mango, banana, a king coconut cut open in front of you. Then the staples: kottu off the hot plate, hoppers, rice and curry.
Your guide will show you how to eat rice and curry with your right hand, properly. It takes a few goes. Vegetarian and kid-friendly options are always there, so nobody stands around holding nothing.

Getting to the start
Pickup anywhere in Colombo is included. Coming from outside the city, we can still collect you — that leg is quoted separately, so ask and we will tell you before you commit.
Nothing is charged on this website.
Who it suits
First-timers who want the city explained rather than listed. Couples, families, solo travellers. Transit passengers with a long layover at Bandaranaike and cruise guests docked at Colombo — the timing bends to your flight or your ship.
It works especially well on day one. You leave knowing how to order, how to get around and what things should cost, which makes the rest of your trip easier. If you are staying longer, look at the 7-day Sri Lanka highlights tour or read who we are.
Ask for a date
Tell us when you are in Colombo and how many of you there are. We reply with a price and a plan — usually the same day. Nothing is charged here, and nothing is confirmed until you say yes.

Questions
What is included?
A private tuk tuk or air-conditioned car, an English-speaking guide, the Gangaramaya Temple ticket, and the food at Pettah — short eats, seasonal fruit, kottu, hoppers, rice and curry, and a king coconut. Vegetarian and kid-friendly options included.
How long does it take?
Four to five hours. Start times are flexible, morning or afternoon.
Is it alright for children?
Yes. The pace is relaxed and there are kid-friendly options at every food stop.
Can I do this on a layover or off a cruise ship?
Yes — it is one of the main reasons people take it. Tell us your flight or ship times and we build the day around them, with pickup and drop-off to match.
Tuk tuk or car?
Either, at the same price. The tuk tuk is the fun one. The car is the sensible one in heavy rain or heat.
